Pine nuts can cause severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, in people who are sensitive. People who are allergic to pine nuts might also react to peanuts and nuts such as almonds. A pine nut allergy is an adverse reaction by the body’s immune system to pine nuts or food containing pine nuts. This type of allergy is rare and serious reactions are very rare. The body’s immune system produces immunoglobulin E (IgE – an antibody) and histamine in response to contact with the allergen. The specific symptoms that can result can vary considerably amongst patients e.g. skin, respiratory and behavioral symptoms. Pine nuts are widely used as a food additive, which mostly are not listed in food labels, which makes it difficult to identify and avoid. The Pine Nut Allergy template has been carefully developed to not include ingredients containing the presence of pine nuts. All food labels should be read carefully before consuming a product, even if it has been used safely in the past.
