Diet Soda Keeps Women Overweight and Increases Health Risk
Diet soda entered our society in the 1950’s and 60’s. Do you remember the early days of Diet Rite, Tab and Fresca?
Yes, those were the chemically infused forerunners to the big diet soda names of today, such as Diet Coke, Diet Pepsi, Barq’s Diet Root Beer, etc…
Diet soda is a massive business (no pun intended). But their intended effect continues to show conflicting evidence and outcomes. It seems the more we talk to new female clients, the more we find experiential evidence showing the backfiring of diet sodas on the body and the brain.
As fitness/wellness professionals, this is no surprise to us. However, it does create a bitter confusion in the women who come to realize the truth.
If we look at this logically, by taking out the high doses of calorie-loaded sugars – there has to be some chemical trickery in order to maintain high levels of sweetness, without the high calories. This is most commonly achieved by the following chemical ingredients…
The top diet soda chemical sweetener offenders you’ll see on labels are:
1 – sucralose (Splenda)
2 – aspartame (NutraSweet)
3 – acesulfame K (Sunett, Ace-K, acesulfame potassium)
4 – saccharin
5 – cyclamates (banned in the US in the late 60’s, but apparently still used in some other countries)
The idea of diet soda preventing weight loss, and even causing weight gain, would seem quite odd at first, however, there are plenty of women (and men) who’s firsthand accounts clearly highlight this contradictory picture.
Let’s keep in mind, the weight issue is only one aspect of this “diet soda mirage” – the other part of this picture are the ill effects on overall health – both mental and physical. Just get a handful of women in a “diet soda addiction” focus group and have them open up about things….
If speaking honestly, what you’ll hear will not only surprise you, but should also scare you – maybe even infuriate you.
There is plenty of material, both written and on video, to give you several hours of enlightening information on this very topic. So for time’s sake, we’ll keep it tightly focused today…
There is enough scientific proof, with more studies ongoing, to further expose the unspoken secret. In March, 2015, The Journal of American Geriatrics published; “Diet Soda Intake Is Associated with Long-Term Increases in Waist Circumference”
But that is just the tip of the iceberg, because this goes far beyond the weight issue and into other serious health implications ranging from depression to hormonal dysfunction – and many other problems in between (headaches, lethargy, GI issues, etc…).
We know it’s hard for women to make the shift to an alternative, especially when she doesn’t have the knowledge on how to navigate all the gray areas of health, wellness and nutrition.

See, let’s take this “diet soda” problem as a specific example. Back in July, our client Janie, asked Joey a question in one of the monthly SCULPTAFIT “E5” Seminars (we include these monthly mindset & nutrition seminars for all our clients here in the SCULPTAFIT Studio of Saint Johns, Mandarin, Fleming Island)…
Her question was; “Joey, I drink diet sodas every day. I’ve heard different things about the risks versus the benefits. What advice or insight do you have about this?”
